Out From The Mist - Representations of Mental Illness
Out from the Mist is a photography, short movie and music competition. The competition is about mental illness but is also about so much more. Individuals facing challenges to their mental wellbeing are varied in their experiences and their responses.
This competition hopes to capture the breadth of that diversity, from the experiences of pain and suffering, caring and empathy for loved ones, through to the elation of conquering obstacles.
Women Street Photographers
Rome Photo Lab is an international photography contest focused on two themes. The first is about Rome, where photographers will provide their unique perspective on the city, capturing the spirit of the place yet without showing any of Rome’s symbolic monuments and famous views. The second is about the street as life’s stage, focusing not so much on documentation but rather on the message and the emotions the photographs will convey: “reality is an ingredient, a mean to an end, not the reason for the photograph” (Eolo Perfido, international Jury member and renown Street Photographer).

NAMELESS FACELESS
This self portrait series is in response to the tragic increase of women being murdered across Australia (notably in my hometown of Ballarat).
Though my features are obscured, the trauma and fear is unmistakable.
The soft colour palette imbues the piece with a sense of sensitivity to the uncomfortable subject of violence against women. There is a heaviness to the atmosphere, conveying the weight of grief and loss.
Through its nuanced portrayal of the subject matter, this diptych is a poignant tribute to the victims of gender-based violence, honouring their memory while also challenging viewers to confront the societal factors that perpetuate such injustice.

FOR I AM CAPTURED.
A solitary flamingo stands confined within the stark confines of a zoo cage, its graceful neck curves with elegance, contrasting sharply with the harsh metal tag around its leg. The vibrant plumage, typically associated with beauty, now serves as a stark realisation of its captivity and constraint, highlighting the stark reality faced by many women who endure domestic violence.
Through the digital lens, its captivity symbolises the feeling of entrapment and helplessness experienced by many women in Australia. Like the flamingo, these women feel unable to freely navigate their lives without fear and apprehension, constrained by the threat of harm lurking around every corner.
It speaks to the urgent need for societal change and support systems that empower women to break free from the cycle of abuse and reclaim their autonomy and dignity.

DeSign
As a street photographer I am forever curious and look for unicorns hidden in places often devoid of human existence.
I unearth the beauty of the discarded, the abandoned, the everyday - the forgotten places of Ballarat and surrounds.
By bringing the obscure to life, I convey familiarity and comfort in the ordinary. This series titled “DeSign” captures the essence of the mundane, breathtaking moments that may be lacking, yet still radiates beauty through simplicity.
